Education for girls

After the Taliban took power, girls were no longer allowed to attend school beyond the sixth grade. For countless children, this meant a dark future without education.

We refused to accept that. One of our volunteers fought for months to obtain permission from the Taliban to run school classes for girls – despite repeated threats. After three months of tireless work, we received temporary permission and opened two school classes in a village far from the city.

The response was overwhelming: many children arrived with torn notebooks and single sheets of paper – but they came. The classes were overcrowded within days; at times, 108 girls sat in a single classroom measuring eight by four meters. Because interest was so great, we opened two more classes.

Today we support 4 school classes with a total of around 200 students, most of them girls. Our school project gives these children motivation and hope for a better future.

Sustainable family aid

As emergency relief, starting in December 2021 we supported 15 to 25 families every month with the financial means to survive. Most of these families are widows who lost their husbands to war or illness.

But emergency relief alone is no lasting solution. So we ask families about their strengths and skills – and give them the means to stand on their own feet: sewing machines, wool, feathers, or chickens.

The result: after two to three months, around 80% of the supported families were able to largely provide for themselves. The families give everything to take their fate back into their own hands – we only give them the initial push.

The sewing class

In our sewing class, young women learn the tailoring craft for three hours every day – complemented by lessons in math and English. The participants tell us about more hope, new goals, and more meaning in their lives.

Trust on the ground

Our aid arrives because we work with volunteers in Afghanistan whom we trust personally. They know the affected families, verify each situation on the ground, and accompany the projects for months.
